What’s The Future Of Marketing

Thanks to the smartphone and the evolution of mobile technology, we have a front-row seat into who consumers are. Mobile data gives us the most precise and current view of any individual consumer. For over a year now, HitTail has been talking to its audience about one aspect of the future of marketing–the long tail, where smaller more agile companies can live in “niches” left behind by larger competitors. It works perfectly online, because inexpensive “word of mouth” marketing is intensified through the ability to forward links in email and the use of social networks.  To really divine the future of marketing, you have to look at how a “long-tail” or niche advertising campaign picks up momentum, and how the company intelligently leverages its revenue to go back into more creative marketing.

Marketing has historically been about communicating messages and ensuring it goes to the right person – framing a product and its brand then deciding what to tell that target market.  HitTail prescribes a particular formula that helps small to medium sized companies master that process of generating consistent, reliable small successes. It is useful to think of marketing as two separate disciplines: delivery and message. Delivery is how we get our message out, message is what we get out.

Trends Driving The Future Of Marketing

Here are the trends that have the biggest impact on the future of marketing.

  • The evolution of mobile devices is one of the prime factors influencing the marketing world.
  • Transparency will dictate brand-customer relationships. Genuine brands that create real value, will be rewarded.
  • Content, particularly visual content, will rule the roost in the online marketing world.
  • Content co-creation between brands and consumers will become a popular trend.
  • Social will become an integral part of the broader marketing discipline.

Marketers are preoccupied with questions like: What is the next big campaign? How can we turn our client into the “next big thing”? What is the next hot trend going to be in retail? Etc. Knowing this, what do some of the top minds in marketing predict for their own futures?  Marketing landscape will change in the  five years from now based on top innovators in marketing and advertising.  The future of marketing is not about the large, established and complacent organizations. It’s about the little guy with enough creativity, determination and patience. All of these trends and innovations are shaping a fast-changing marketing landscape.

What is Google Hummingbird?

Google has a new search algorithm, the system it uses to sort through all the information it has when you search and come back with answers. It’s called “Hummingbird”, the name come from being “precise and fast”. Google uses search algorithm to sort through the billions of web pages and other information it has, in order to return what it believes are the best answers.

Google announced Hummingbird on September 26, 2013, Google’s 15th birthday but it had actually already been in place about a month prior.

It’s the name of the new search algorithm that Google is using, one that Google says should return better results. Hummingbird looks at PageRank — how important links to a page are deemed to be — along with other factors like whether Google believes a page is of good quality, the words used on it and many other things. When Google switched to Hummingbird, it’s as if it dropped the old engine out of a car and put in a new one. Google did this so quickly that no one really noticed the switch.

Penguin and Panda updates:

Unlike the previous Panda and Penguin updates which were initially released as add-ons to Google’s existing algorithm, Hummingbird has been cited as a complete overhaul of the core algorithm. Panda, Penguin and other updates were changes to parts of the old algorithm, but not an entire replacement of the whole. Previous algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin sparked significant reporting of lost traffic and rankings. Hummingbird is a brand new engine, though it continues to use some of the same parts of the old, like Penguin and Panda

Hummingbird purpose and voice search:

One of Hummingbird’s main purposes was to translate semantic search from a concept to a reality — and one that would ultimately become the search standard. Why type your search when you can speak your search? Voice search is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation.

Conversational Search is the basis of Google’s new algorithm and core update named Hummingbird. “What’s the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?” A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page that says “buy” and “iPhone 5s,” for example.

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. It may better understand the actual location of your home, if you’ve shared that with Google. It might understand that “place” means you want a brick-and-mortar store. It might get that “iPhone 5s” is a particular type of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

In particular, Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

Will Hummingbird affect my rankings?

Hummingbird is part of Google’s need to become less dependent on keywords. Compared to previous updates, there has been little reported about wide spread losses in rankings. With Hummingbird, Google hopes to significantly alter the way users interact with their search engine. All search engines seek to provide relevant search results quickly and efficiently. Google is working toward a new level of speed and precision in their search results. If you want to be sure, check your organic traffic from late August to early October of 2013. If you see any major dips, that could be a result of Hummingbird.

The new Hummingbird algorithm is better for everyone including Google, consumers, SEOs, and website owners. Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole sentence or conversation or meaning has been taken into account, rather than particular words.

Hummingbird goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words. The only thing SEO companies have to fear is not understanding Hummingbird or other future updates. Google Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of pages from across the web to bring back better results.

Not only do you need to produce high-quality content for guest blogging, but you need to make sure that the blog itself is of high quality and trustworthy. Understanding the difference between “link earning and link building” is critical for SEO companies and for those thinking of hiring an SEO company. We need to be smarter in our approach and more ethical with our tactics. “Link earning” is the perfect opportunity to do so. Every SEO company in the world should stop “link building” and start “link earning”.

Link earning is a newer and more proactive approach to acquiring web traffic. The key to earning links, generating traffic and ultimately boosting rankings is not to depend on just asking for links, or even build your own links, but to earn your links in a natural way. Create great content, whether it is an article, a video, infographic, whatever, that people will see as valuable. Get attention by being original and pointing out new information.

Some differences between earning links and building links.

Link building used to be one of the best SEO practice to increase your number of backlinks. The main problem is link building is focusing on quantity rather than quality. As marketers we need to focus on driving visitors to a site through referral traffic and allowing the rankings to increase as a byproduct. In other words, don’t just think about the rankings, think about getting visitors to consume your content. The rankings will happen by themselves and people naturally share something they discovered and decided was worthwhile.

Earning links is surely great way to optimize your site. Earning links originated from Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land. This phrase is a huge win for the SEO industry. This is our chance to win back the credibility that black-hat and spammy SEO companies have taken away from us. Earning links is clearly better. Anybody can build them whether you provide value or not. But in order to earn them you must provide value. These links are clearly going to be of a higher quality as a result. Plus they’re more natural which is something Google has placed a very close eye on now.

Benefits of SEO: Why You Definitely Should Use It

SEO is an effective and important marketing strategy and there are many benefits to a good SEO strategy, we have outlined the top 10 to help you understand why SEO is awesome. Websites should engage in search engine optimization, or SEO as it’s commonly called. SEO agencies are able to track nearly every aspect of their strategy, like increases in rankings, traffic and conversions. What are the advantages of SEO?

Here are the some advantages of search engine optimization.

1. Cost effectiveness.  SEO is one of the most cost-effective marketing strategies because it targets users who are actively looking for your products and services online. Search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo provide organic listings, i.e. free listings. So, when your website is listed on the first search engine result page, there’s no need for paid advertising like Ad-words. The traffic resulting from SEO is more qualified than many other marketing strategies, resulting in cost-savings for companies.

2. Increase in traffic. SEO also focuses on creating informative and keyword relevant title tags and meta descriptions, which show up in the result pages. Having optimized tags and descriptions helps to increase click through rate, which also promotes increases in qualified web traffic. However, with SEO, the traffic is never ending. Just make sure you maximize these results by using long tail keywords.

3. Build more trustworthiness. People use search engines such as Google because they know they can trust the results it gives them. So, having your site listed on Google’s SERP makes your website trustworthy as well – a definite plus in your favor.

4. Take Your Business to the Next Level. One of the advantages of SEO is that it gives you an opportunity to excel above your competitors. Granted, your competitors are using SEO too; however, long tail keywords tailored specifically to your site’s niche and purpose gives you a chance to capture the right target audience.

5. Hit your local target audience. With SEO in full force, there’s no need to run out and pay for billboard advertisement locally. SEO consists of rearranging the site’s architecture and links to make pages within the website easier to find and navigate. This not only makes it easier for search engines to crawl your site and find pages, but also makes it easier for users to find information on your website as well. Instead engage in SEO marketing with long tail keywords geared towards your local audience.

6. Higher sales. Thanks to advanced technology we can now get the internet on mobile devices. In short, people can Google a business while on the go. All of the previously mentioned factors will unquestionably result in more sales. This is one of the best advantages of SEO; after all, you want your website to make money.

7. Brand awareness. Since top position rankings result in significant impressions, having your website in these top positions on the result pages translates to more exposure for your website. Plus, being on the first page for your targeted keywords not only helps users to associate your brand with those keywords, but it instills trust, since companies on the first page are generally perceived to be more trustworthy. The more your pages and content rank in high positions in the search engines, the more chances you have for users to see your content and associate with your brand. Using SEO will make your brand stand out from the rest and can easily be the boost that you need to see your sales go through the roof.

8. Customers data access. Using SEO you get your customer data. Customer data is extremely valuable in this business and is not that hard to come by with the right tools. You can discover new products to expand to by looking at keyword data and seeing what people are searching the most for. You can use this to your advantage and find a high search volume keyword with low competitiveness and although that may be hard to find it has the potential to bring in thousands of sales per month to your website. Manipulating it to your advantage can be exponentially beneficial for your business.

All of these advantages of SEO result in one thing: you’ll get a great ROI(Return on Investment). Considering this is what you want for your website, it’s well worth the time and effort to make SEO part of your marketing strategy. Search engine optimization has many benefits, but we know it can be costly at first. Unlike advertisements the affects of SEO are permanent. They don’t suddenly stop if you stop paying for them. Of course you will need a little upkeep to maintain that top 1st spot ranking. If you want to grow your business invest into a SEO campaign today.

How to use long tail keywords to better rank your business

E-commerce and other sites have been increasingly pumping up their online efforts. This effort is all in the search of a higher ROI and it’s all part of the magical process of inbound marketing. There are 3 phases to this process: “appeal” (ads, blogs, seo), conversion (landing pages, contact forms) and relationships (email marketing, social media).

Today we’re going to talk a little bit about the “appealing” factor. More specifically, the use of long tail keywords, and how it can help your website better rank organically.

Background Overview

Did you know that the term “long tail” came from a book by Chris Anderson, “The Long Tail” – Why the future of business Is Selling Less of More. The book came out in 2004 and the term gained a lot of popularity between Marketers. What this means is that products that are more mainstream, require more demand but are limited in quantity. Terms that are more specific have less demand, can be as economically attractive as their mainstream counterparts.

What are Long Tail Keywords?

Long tail keywords are generally formed by 3 or more words, creating tiny phrases that represent a more personalized search. This strategy represents a way to differentiate yourself, whether it’s on an adwords ad or in a good SEO practice.

This way, generic terms are left out to give preference to more specific keywords, that target exactly what it is that your customer wants to buy. Long tail keywords facilitate the generation of leads, with segmentation being on top of the sales funnel.

At first look, it does seem like a riskier strategy. Since it involves much less volume in searches, consequentially targeting a smaller number of people.

But on the other side of it, the strategy represents a larger possibility of the searcher finding exactly what he is looking for. This also makes for a much better quality score on your google ad. Sites like HitTail are a great way to find the targeted keywords you’re looking for by analyzing your existing website traffic.

Use of Keywords

Let’s go the example of a Marketing agency in Miami. MIA weblab is looking for organic ways to appear on google.

The use of keywords like “marketing agency miami”, “marketing agency near me” are very generic and  might not appear since there will be so much competition around it.

Good examples of long tail keywords for this specific store would be:

  • Ecommerce marketing agency in Miami
  • Social Media for Ecommerce stores in Miami
  • What are the best Miami Agencies
  • New skateboards Miami
  • Where to buy skateboards
  • Skateboard prices Miami

These keywords have a much smaller number of monthly searches, but in return, these keywords significantly enhance your chances of appearing and being clicked on. Long keywords generally have a larger conversion rate and much less competition.

The use of long tail keywords in your marketing strategy is essential to receive more visitors that are qualified buyers. This also helps you understand your audience and what they’re looking for in a much more efficient way.

Now, think of your product and forget that you’re a part of the company. Imagine what you would search for if you were the customer and what you would type in to find it on Google.

Work on this exercise and look for the solution to your problem. I can guarantee you will find new, target long tail keywords you didn’t know were there before.

Keyword Research And Analysis Tools

Keywords analysis and research tools do not drive only your website traffic, but also bring the right kind of visitors. With keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are actively seeking.

Competition is another reason for the difficulty in getting organic traffic for blog posts. Keyword tools do not display all of the terms that people search for, nor they display terms with small levels of search volume. Because of this, many bloggers in the same niche research and optimize using the same limited set of keyword terms and make it nearly impossible for newcomers to rank without a lot of SEO work.

The simple goal of keyword research is to find out what your target audience is searching and what it will take to actually rank for those keywords and phrases. These are free and paid tools which will help you find which keywords to target and how competitive they are.

5 Easy Ways: How to Increase click-through rate (CTR)

In our fast developing digital world, it is no longer enough to have a ‘functional’ website. Because of the overflow of information, you have to (re)adapt your site to current trends. Increasing your CTR (or organic click-through rate) is a great way to do that. CTR is a useful tool commonly used to determine how successful an online campaign is. So increase your CTR to increase your visibility online and consequently increase your profit.
There are different problems to consider. As we develop new ways to modify our codes to search engines, we tend to forget that the ‘clicks’ don’t depend only on complex algorithms but primarily on the human doing the clicking. Another possible problem: though your content may be great your advertising of it might not be as great. No matter what your exact problem is by giving these five categories go, you will most definitely increase your CTR

  • Improve Your SERP Ranking:

The studies show that about 90% of users don’t leave the first page of search engine results. Not only that but being on the first page doesn’t cut it anymore. As lower you go on the page (even the first page) your CTR ranking decreases dramatically. This is why improving your SERP ranking (or Search Engine Results Page) is a must, if you want your CTR to grow as well.
Google awards those who accommodate to its rules with better SERP rankings. So if you want to improve your ranking, you should focus on these categories: content, SEO, and accuracy of your information. Generate quality content, optimize your site to SEO standards and be sure to display essential and updated information on your website.

  • Make An Eye-catching Title Tag:

Your title tag is the first thing a user will see on the Google search results page. Also, it can be your anchor text when sharing your site and displayed on the tab of your user’s browser. Though according to SEO, titles and meta descriptions aren’t as important as before, they are still relevant – mainly because they are a helpful way to connect to your user.
Of course, your title should display the name of your business and some relevant keywords, as you should please both search engines and its human users, make the title eye-catching and clever. In that way, you can stand-out in the masses of similar results and attract your user’s attention.
Keep your title longer no more than 60 characters to secure that search engine will show it completely.

  • Give A Helpful Meta Description:

The Meta description is a snippet placed just under the title information on the search engine results page, and the second thing your user will see. Because the title tag is relatively short with enough space for your name and a witty marketing line, you should use meta description to give your users other relevant information, in 160 characters or less.
As we have mentioned, description isn’t the most relevant parameter for search engine algorithms, but it is still a good way to attract traffic to your site by the use of your keywords but also a helpful way to display relevant information for the user.
Depending on your business your description can give some important information such as the kind of business, address, contact number, etc.

  • Stand Out With Rich Snippets:

Now you have excellent content, and your title and description are up to SEO standards. Great. But to stand out, you might need more than that. GWM, an SEO company, advocates the use of rich snippets to boost your CTR.
In the wide range of info, users want to know what they are clicking on before they click on it. Rich snippets allow just that. While still on the search result page, your users can see all additional information that you might not have space for in your title or description. You can add product price, rating, number of available items, who made the product and so much more.
Besides, rich snippets will set you apart from your competition as not everyone is still using them.

  • Make A Search-engine-and-user-friendly URL:

So you have optimized information you could give your user while they are still on the search engine result page, and now comes the ‘link.’ Another useful ‘trick’ to increase your CTR is to make your URL more search-engine-and-user-friendly. Typically URLs are dynamic and comprised of a bundle of signs, letters, numbers, punctuation marks and the like. By making your URL static and keyword-oriented, you can make your website more appealing both to search engines to index but also to your users to click on.

With these five easy ways, you are sure to increase your CTR significantly. Remember that all of the optimizing you do is done both for your search engine and for your users. By improving your SERP ranking, creating memorable title tag and informative description, giving that extra info with rich snippets and creating a friendly URL – you will boost your CTR in no time.

Why Voice Search is Changing Keyword Research

Voice search changing keywords research is an inevitable step in SEO evolution. It’s going to be a game changer for both users and SEO experts. The number of people taking advantage of voice search — asking your phone or another device to find something, rather than typing it into a search engine — is on the rise.

This is going to have a huge impact on the way companies market their products and service, because, simply put, we talk differently than we type. Voice search is going to have a huge impact on the digital landscape. Keep reading to find out what this means for how we identify and use keywords.

Short tail keywords and Long tail keywords

Keywords are what allow users to find your content. The user will search for something and if your content is a match for that search, the search engine will put you at the top of the list or results.

There are two approaches to keywords: short tail keywords and long tail keywords.

Short tail keywords are search terms that consist of only one or two words, such as “birds” or “Florida birds.” They act as a catch all and will turn up lots of very unspecific results.

Long tail keywords contain more than one word and lend themselves to much more specific search results, like “birds native to Florida.” There isn’t an official cut off as to how many words are needed to be considered long tail keywords, but most people agree that anything with three or more words qualifies as a long tail keyword.

Keep in mind though that while keywords are what get people to your page, the content in what keeps them. A variety of quality text, images, and multimedia is as important as ever when it comes to keeping people engaged.

Geotagging is pretty popular these days. When using voice search, people are very likely to specify “near me” or “nearby.” Keeping this in mind, one of your focuses with keywords should be to attract local business.

You can increase the likelihood of being discovered via voice search by increasing the number of Google My Business locations and by geotagging pictures with the location of your business.

This is where social media accounts can really come in handy — especially if you have other customers geotagging your business.

It is also important to make sure profiles like Yelp are filled out as completely as possible since this is one of the ways voice searches are being fulfilled.  When using voice search, people tend to ask questions like they would if they were talking to another person, as opposed to searching incomplete phrases or keywords alone. We tend to spare our fingers the effort of typing more than in absolutely necessary, but the same cannot be said of our tongue. We tend to spare our fingers the effort of typing more than in absolutely necessary, but the same cannot be said of our tongue.

This new approach is going to make it more difficult to pinpoint the keywords users are interested in as the search consists of more than the bare-bones keyword itself, but it isn’t going to make keywords any less important.

Future of voice search and SEO

SEO has always been a moving target. Search engines like Google frequently change the algorithms they use to rank search results just to keep people from gaming the system. It’s no wonder voice search features have some people stumped.

Keep in mind also that desktop searches and non-voice mobile searches are never going to disappear completely. Nailing down the perfect keyword isn’t a science and with all these factors to take into account, it is becoming harder to hit that nail on the head.

Good luck!

How to Set Your Preferred Domain and Double the Power of Your Backlinks

Setting the domain preference should be the first thing that should be done by any SEO guy. Following this simple tip can even double the power of your link building efforts. However, not following this SEO tip could cut those efforts in half.

Three reasons why you should set your preferred domain:

1. The Panda Update

Panda is responsible for penalizing the sites with duplicate content. A large reason for the Panda update was for Google to rid their search results of duplicate content. Google sees YourDomain.com and www.YourDomain.com as two different web pages. This could be perceived as duplicate content. So setting your preferred domain (www or no www) will let Google know which domain they should crawl and index. It is advisable to the webmaster to choose 1 version and make it as fixed from the Google Webmaster Tools.

2. Double the Power of your Backlinks

It is crucial to choose one domain name version and use it for link building. If Google thinks the www and non www version of a web page are different pages, then there is a strong possibility that being inconsistent with the preferred domain you build links to could hurt your link building efforts.

For example, let’s say your preferred domain is not set, and half the time you link to www.YourDomain.com and the other half you link to YourDomain.com. There is a strong possibility that Google may think you’re linking to two different web pages, therefore cutting your link building efforts in half. Why take that chance? Now, Google does try to canonicalize matching domains, but they don’t guarantee it.

3. Personal Preferences

I always set my preferred domain to no www. In my opinion, why say www if you don’t have to? www doesn’t roll off the tongue very well. In fact, many people just say dub, dub dub. So I don’t think I’m alone here. There is no such hard and fast rule. Choose the version with which you are most comfortable. No matter what version you choose, stick to that version.
